PART 19. Inspire right desire
If I said that you must not click on this link to see what is there, – that you absolutely positively must not click on this link —anyone would immediately be preoccupied with the wanting to, and the questions of “Should I? /Shouldn’t I?” such that even if you don’t look, the ignition of your imagination – or desire – has been achieved.
When we focus on the thing that is to be refrained from we actually create an arousal or awakening that can work against the very thing that is intended to be achieved. Even when the desire to do right is real and present, the arousal or interest can take place. The statement of the restraint of the law can act instead as suggestion. This is the reason subliminal advertising works!
Conversely the freedom of Life can act as awakening to righteousness. The difference between the two approaches is an example in application of instruction from either of the two trees in the Garden of Eden – the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, or the Tree of Life.
God does not tempt. We need help to learn to live for God out of devotion, love and awe rather than dry duty. The regulations and consequences have a very real place, but they are only one side of the coin. The flip side is the desire to do right, not the having to out of duty.
